She collided with the Norwegian collier Storstad at about 1:30-2:00 AM May 29, 1914 while running in a dense fog. Her master, Captain Kendall immediately ordered the Empress run aground, but the liner could not respond. She filled with water at a rate of close to 65,000 gallon per second. Only a very few of the passengers made it to the lifeboats. Ten minutes after the collision the Empress rolled onto her side, and minutes later she sank. Only 217 of 1,057 passengers survived, while more than 60% of the crew did (248 out of 420). One of the reasons the vessel sank so fast was failure to have men stationed at the watertight doors throughout the ship as mandated by company policy. Something for which Capatin Kendall was later chastised. She sank in about 150 feet of water and supposedly rises to almost 90 feet. Divers measured a site of impact hole of 14' by 25' where Storstad struck her.
